Cardinal George Jacob Koovakad: the 377th Lion Sermon Preacher

We’re pleased to announce that Cardinal George Jacob Koovakad, Prefect of the Vatican Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue and the person responsible for the Vatican's global interfaith relations, will deliver our 377th Lion Sermon on Wednesday 14th October 2026.
A diplomat whose postings have taken him from Algeria and Korea to Iran, Costa Rica, and Venezuela, Cardinal Koovakad speaks from a unique global perspective on the challenges and changes facing the City of London.
The Sermon will be preached during Choral Evensong, sung by Lloyd's Choir and led by Revd Josh Harris, beginning at 6pm. Attendance is free and open to all but you need to book a ticket and arrive early.
The Lion Sermon is one of the City of London's most distinctive traditions. Established by Sir John Gayer, a merchant and former Lord Mayor of London, it commemorates his legendary encounter with a lion in the Syrian desert and has for centuries reflected on the theme of facing challenges with the help of God.
